Which is more important, the music or the lyrics?

music... Lyrics are just needed for the voice to be an instrument... like strings for a guitar.

if u cant hear the lyrics its pretty pointless song, might aswell jus call it a music piece. i love lyrics thats what makes a song a song for me. i love to listen and relate the the words thats what makes songs special when they seem personal to the things goin on round me. also a good song will have lyrics that fit with the music cuz if the music is gr8 n lyrics r rlly random r shitty then it ruins da atmosphere.

for the crowd the lyrics are the most important thing.. the best thing at a gig is knowing that if u sign along that others will aswell. It if it was just focused on the music then you know ur not gonna enjoy it more.
And for the band the lyrics are a major part, but the lyrics arent going to work unless the music is down to the "T" so to speak...
Like slayer, their lyrics get the crowd jumping but the music.. OMG u cant NOT go fucking mad lol

it depends on what the song is for. classical is very emotional and doesnt need lyrics but some music does to be more emotive (no, not necessarily emo, all music is emotional in some way...)... blah blah blah. but yeah, both are important, coz you can have lyrics without the music (gregorian chant) and you can have music without lyrics, its not as common but still exsists. ok im rambling. so basically both lyrics and music complement each other, and are both important in their own ways. in my opinion that is...

i agree with charli. one of my fave songs is 241 by reel big fish and the only lyrics it has is "241" every now and again. with good music you get lost in it, but if a song has good lyrics it lets you relate to it more. so yeah, waffling now but music and lyrics are both just as important

equally both important, as has been proven in this conversation, people have said, if lyrics are good, you get lost, if music is good, u dont care about lyrics when both are amazing, well, u basically wet ur pants its that damn good

i would say lyrics are what give modern music the pashion and meaning, im my opinion music without lyrics is like..well...shit, lyrics are what help people asssociate with music, and gives them all sorts of emotions....

one slap to guesty for going off topic basically lyrics have the passion, music has the edge to drive that passion to a crowd, but what about solo's??? opinions?

yeah, your right marly. and it does depend on how good the music is, some music just doesnt need lyrics to convey its meaning, but with some it heightens the effect.

good point! for me Solos can be very passionate. (GnR - November Rain and now i'm obsessed with Pitchblend - Timeless) even more so than the words. but i supose without the words you don't know what the solo is about.

you dont always have to know what music is about for it to effect you in some way, songs mean different things to different people. blah blah blah. lol. but yesh. solos kinda build up to heighten the emotion being portrayed. solos are very important in music because it shows that the instruments play an important part aswell as the lyrics. and they are awesome

lyrics are what help people asssociate with music, and gives them all sorts of emotions.... i agree with ocky, but i do believe that you can get that kind of emotion from songs without lyrics, for example Opeth::To Bid You Farewell, it has very few lyrics (that are amazingg!) but most of the song is instrumentals building up to the lyrics, and its also amazing! a lil bit depressing, but its a masterpiece so i forgive them
